‘Guitar Adventure’ – Morocco

This will be our third visit to Morocco for our unique ‘Guitar Adventure’. On this very special week long event we aim to provide an experience incorporating many aspects. On one level its simply a relaxing holiday in warm winter sunshine with time and space to learn, practise and play guitar in a beautiful setting. However it is also a fantastic opportunity to explore an ancient culture rich in colourful sights, sounds and tastes. This very special retreat provides food for all the senses. It takes place in the beautiful ancient walled town of Taroudant in the south of Morocco, located within sight of the Atlas Mountain range. Our stunning venue ‘La Maison Anglaise’, incorporates beautiful eco gardens, cool shaded areas and a central swimming pool within a new building complex that has been built using time honoured traditional methods. The venue combines traditional and innovative sustainable design with all modern amenities and comforts you could wish for. The beautiful courtyard and terrace and, airy, en-suite bedrooms makes this is the perfect place to bring your partners too as they can simply relax, sight see or take part in many different creative activities on offer.

RETREAT CONTENT – Choosing, arranging playing and performing songs with confidence.

Guitar wise we will spend the week exploring a range of songs in different styles and genres, which are suitable for performing to small groups. This might be round a campfire, at an open mic session or at any small gathering where you might be asked to perform or want to play something simple, inclusive and within your abilities. We will discuss song choice and learn how to adapt and arrange songs so that they are tailored to your abilities and the environment in which they are performed. We will cover intros, outros, dynamic’s, timing, chord choices, bass runs, fills etc. The week is dedicated to honing your current skill set and adding useful tools to enhance your reportoire. You will have plenty of opportunity to practise performing songs in a fun, safe and supportive environment. All with the ultimate aim of improving your confidence when playing in public.

Places are limited to 14 players (plus partners).

ACTIVITIES:

The retreats will feature group guitar teaching sessions each day, along with plenty of free time to play, go on excursions to local places of interest, relax in the spa or take advantage of some one-to-one guitar tuition. There are many optional trips, excursions and experiences you can choose to take part in, including walking in the mountains visiting Berber villages and Oasis, craft villages, souks, gardens and much more. We will be actively encouraging adventure while we are here! There will be after dinner performances, sing-a-longs and jam sessions. The teaching content will be tailored to suit all abilities from relative beginners to intermediate and above. This is an acoustic only retreat. The whole retreat is designed to be fun first and inclusive without any pressure or competition. You will return home feeling relaxed and renewed with a bunch of new songs and techniques to re-invigorate your playing and performance skills, plus some wonderful memories of a very special place.

THE TEACHERS:

Stuart Marshall is the founder of Guitar Retreats and group leader on all our events. A guitar and vocal coach who also has decades of experience as a working musician and live performer both in the UK and internationally. Stuart enjoys playing and teaching within many different genres including Rock, Pop, Reggae, Americana, Funk and Blues. He works with students of all ages and abilities, facilitating groups and guiding individuals to explore and develop their talents. Over the last 18 years he has run dozens of successful retreats and taught many hundreds of adults through his Guitar Retreats company. A patient, inclusive and enthusiastic teacher, Stuart loves to share the simple joy of making and performing music with as many people as he can.
